No matter what condition you are suffering from, there is always a cause.
Finding that cause can quite often be the key to finding a better way forward.
To explain this I am going to make reference to the iceberg principle where the tip of the iceberg is what is appearing in the form of a certain condition – lets say a skin condition, a swelling, or loose bowels by way of example.
They may have only just appeared, but out of site is the massive iceberg. The iceberg represents what is behind your illness and it is this that you need to address, not the tip at the top.
The tip at the top is just telling you that something is wrong within – some in-balances have developed and your body’s delicate balancing act of homoestasis has been disrupted at some level.
Modern allopathic medicine will often just focus on the symptoms (the tip of the iceberg) and concentrate on these. In emergency medicine, this is what you need to do.
In a chronic situation where the danger is not imminent, a different approach is often required if you want to find a solution.
In the naturopathic world, we are more inclined to spend our time focusing on the iceberg itself, trying to determine how that iceberg has developed (probably over many years).
To understand how the iceberg may form, it might help if I break it down into 5 steps.
Step 1
In ayurverdic terms this is where there is an accumulation of too much fire. In other words, inflammation is appearing somewhere in your body.
Inflammation can be the start of a process that leads on to a chronic disease so if you can nip this in the bud, then all is well and good. The problem arises when we have inflammation in the system without knowing it.
Inflammation can start from anything – from low stomach acid and your inability to break down gluten, to a bacterial/viral/parasitic infection. It could even be long term constipation, a compromised liver due to too much alcohol, or long term antibiotics – the list is literally endless.
Step 2
If this inflammation is not abated or the fire is not extinguished, then aggravation can start in specific parts of your body. Typical examples might be IBS type symptoms in your large bowel or heartburn or some soreness in the joints.
Step 3
If no action is taken to stop this process, then the excess heat is transported around the body. This may result in you just not feeling good, or excessively tired.
Step 4
If this spreading carries on unabated then the fire will find a weak spot in your body. Quite often this is a predisposition which you may have inherited from your parents. For some people this may be a skin issue like psoriasis or eczema, for others it might be a joint problem like arthritis and others a gut issue like colitis. It will vary from person to person.
Similarly, the weakness may even be an old sports injury or scar tissue.
This stage may be the start of an auto immune response when your immune system, after fighting the fire for so long, might become over or under active. It might be this is the stage when you make an appointment to see your doctor.
Step 5
If the causes are not addressed, then the tissue cells in this weak spot could start to degenerate. If so, this could be the start of a disease process where more serious symptoms emerge and your doctor may be making an appointment for you to see a consultant.
Isn’t it all in the genes?
Many people are starting to learn more about their genetics to determine what diseases they might be susceptible to and some are given to believing that their chronic illness is predetermined by their genetics and there is nothing they can do to prevent it.
So my only word of caution about genetic testing is how you intepret the results.
One of the most important pieces of the genetic puzzle is a type of variation you may have. This is known as a SNP (Pronounced ‘snip) which is short for single nucleotide polymorphism. So far roughly ten million SNPs have been identified in the human genome, with each of us having over a million.
Most of those SNPs don’t seem to affect us very much. They represent a slight variation or abnormality in various genes, but so far as we know, these variations don’t seem to make much difference in the way our bodies function.
Some snips like BRAC1 and the MTHFR gene can create a whole host of health problems ranging from irritability and obsessiveness to birth defects and cancer.
Note that I said can.
They don’t have to, that’s why I urge caution when considering your genetics.
Most genetic snips indicate that you have a certain susceptibility or weakness to a disease that you may have inherited from your parents.
This does not however mean that it is inevitable that you get this disease.
Far from it - it’s all about whether you turn these genes on or not.
If your lifestyle is good and you follow most of the 16 pillars of health I refer to in the web site then there is every reason to believe you can protect yourself.
So, I’m all for genetic testing provided you use it for your benefit ie you use it to change and improve some aspects of your lifestyle so that you do not turn those genes on. It’s what we call ‘epigenetics.’
Things are getting harder
The challenges of treating chronic and auto immune diseases have increased in recent years. You only have to look at the increasing levels of toxicity we are faced with day to day both in our food and in the air to understand this, not to mention the affects that wifi has on our immune systems.
Relieving the body of toxins is always a major focus for me because these are often the starting point for a disease.
In the last 10 years or so, removing toxins has got a whole lot harder mainly due, in my experience, to two key contaminants that are increasing exponentially.
These are:
1)intracellular bacteria
and
2) mould
By intracellular bacteria I am referring to borrelia, the lyme bacteria along with its co-infections such as the different strains of babesia and bartonella.
The symptoms that you can get from these bacteria emulate every type of disease you can think of and this is why so many people I see have been misdiagnosed for many years.
In my opinion, if you have any chronic or auto immune disease you should get tested for lyme and mould, just in case because you may be barking up the wrong tree with other diagnoses.
This is something that can be done easily with the Bioresonance.
So, if you come to see me in a clinic situation, and you have a chronic or auto-immune disease, then I will be looking to get as far back to the beginning as I can – to point 1 of the Iceberg principle if I can.
I will learn a lot from your medical history but ultimately most will be revealed from the Bioresonance testing which helps me get to the causes more quickly with no necessity for extra laboratory tests on top.
