An initial consultation will last for around 1.5 hours. I will need you to complete and input form prior to coming. This will give me your complete medical history. I will also require a 3 day diet diary completing.
In addition to looking at whatever specific issues you have, I will also be looking at certain measurements to give me an overall picture of your health.
Finding the cause is the key to finding the solution
Normal (allopathic) medicine is geared towards treating your symptoms. By comparison, the main thrust of naturopathic medicine is to look at the causes of your disease. Only by addressing the causes of in-balances can you achieve good health and wellness.
I need to know as much as possible about your medical history, your eating habits and lifestyle so that I can determine the possible causes of any dis-ease or in-balances.
In the past I have used laboratory testing to find a cause if this is what was required. These tests tend to be invasive and they can be quite expensive.
Now, I can carry out this investigation in-house with the use of the Bioresonance machine. it is much cheaper for you and, in most cases, you get your answers during the consultation.
Stressors and therapy blocks can be anything from heavy metals, scar tissue, viruses, pathogenic bacteria – all of which can be residing throughout your body.
If we find therapy blocks, then we must remove them before starting on a healing programme. Once again the bioresonance machine comes to the fore in this type of scenario. It also has hundreds of therapy programmes that can support organ function and promote health in the body.
First do no harm
I first learned about the power of nutritional therapy over 20 year ago when I was suffering from severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
The reason I am always excited about nutritional therapy is that is can be extremely powerful and effective in treating a whole host of chronic diseases that, when used correctly, are totally safe and without side effects.
This fits in nicely with the statement by Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine – who, 2000 years ago, was responsible for the now the famous statement ‘first do no harm.’
What to expect when you come to see me
Naturally my main focus is to work on the main issues that are concerning you. However, in order to support your health going forward, I also like to look the twelve pillars of your health. A brief summary is given below.
THE TWELVE PILLARS OF YOUR HEALTH
Throughout my time in the health business and as a nutritional therapist, I have identified 12 areas that are crucial to your health. It is rare that disease has one cause – it is nearly always multi-factorial which is why a nutritional therapist will always take an overall ‘holistic’ approach to dis-ease rather than dealing with the symptoms.
This is supported by the fact that no one part of your body operates in isolation. Everything is inter-connected.
Every organ in your body functions better when it is not put under pressure and this is where your diet is key. A good diet supports your body’s organs, a bad diet causes them more work and this, in turn, can lead to disease.
Below I have listed 12 key areas that are all interconnected and are key to your health and wellbeing.
If you come to see me as a nutritional therapist I will want to see how all these areas are functioning because any disruption to one or more of them may be the hidden cause(s) to your problem and finding the cause is usually the key to finding a solution.
These 12 pillars provide the foundations for your health. They determine the quality of the terrain on which your body operates or, another way of putting it, the fertility of the soil on which your body grows. Fertile soil will yield good health, barren soil will not.
Paying attention to these 12 areas will improve the quality of your soil. If you can work on them then you will reduce dramatically your potential for dis-ease.
The 80/20 rule here
Eating healthily and looking after yourself does not have to be a chore or boring. It just means getting more things in your favour than otherwise. This is where the 80/20 rule comes in. In most of the protocols I prepare for clients I operate this rule which means there is nearly always some flexibility. Of course there are exceptions as I am sure you can imagine but overall the 80/20 rule applies.
Your immune system is the key to a healthy recovery and long term health
The following 12 pillars all do one thing – they all support your immune system. The more your immune system is supported the more robust and effective it will be in fighting illness and disease and in the long term, keeping you healthy.
One of the conditions your immune system dislikes more than most is on-going low level inflammation. This type of inflammation can be one of the triggers/starting point for nearly all dis-ease including auto-immune diseases. So, if there are inflammatory processes going on in your body and your immune system is weakened as a result, you will be much more prone to dis-ease. It is now generally accepted, in naturopathic terms, that all disease starts with inflammation.
Finding the cause of low level inflammation is the key. Something as simple as food intolerance can often be the culprit.
2. A High antioxidant status
Your antioxidant status is another important measure of your ability to fight off and prevent disease.
According to Richard Cutler, MD of anti-aging research at the national institute of health: ‘The amount of anti-oxidants that you maintain in your body is directly proportional to how long you live.’
In June 2002, The journal of the American Medical association quoted, ‘Low levels of antioxidant vitamins may increase the risk of several chronic diseases.’
The bioresonance equipment allows me to assess your antioxidant and free radical status.
3. Keeping your diet body more alkaline than acidic
Our ancestors lived on a diet that represented 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic. These days we are, on average, consuming the opposite ie an 80% acidic and 20% alkaline.
The consequence is that our organic fluids in and around our cells and our lymph is acidic and this is one of the major causes of inflammation and disease. This is an environment that many of the stressors I mentioned earlier thrive in. Heavy metals and viruses for example are more likelyl to flourish in an acidic environment. Acidosis is attributable directly to disease like arthritis and osteoporosis but a major contributor to many others. Cancer for example thrives in an acidic environment but struggles in an alkaline environment. We can get a good idea of your alkaline/acidity levels by carrying out simple urine or saliva tests . Once we know your levels we can act accordingly.
Key product: If we need to alkalise you quickly then I use a superb product called Basenpulver – a German alkalising powder that you can add to water.
The way you digest your food is key to your health. If you do not break down your food efficiently this may mean you are unable to absorb nutrients efficiently. The result is sub-optimal health.
Something as simple as failing to chew your food efficiently over many years can set off a cascade of events that can lead to an inefficient digestive system – a contributory factor in many dis-eases.
Your digestive system does not just involve your mouth, oesophagus stomach and small intestine. It also relies on your pancreas and liver, so looking after all of these organs is important to your well-being.
6. Supporting your body’s ability to detoxify
Well, you can’t prevent all toxins from getting in – and some of them will be created internally anyway as the result of normal metabolism. These toxins must be removed efficiently if you are going to keep healthy.
Research has shown conclusively that the more efficiently your body removes waste and toxins, the more resistant you are to disease.
Some people go to the loo every 2 days and believe that is okay – it isn’t. (our African native counterparts go 3 times daily and they don’t get bowel disease).
Likewise many people have ‘sensitive ‘ bowels and believe it is okay to have occasional loose bowels. It isn’t.
Both situations disrupt your microbiome (the levels of bacteria in your gut). Every week studies are coming through proving (what naturopaths have known for many years) that your good health is dependent on keeping good levels of healthy bacteria in your gut. They are the reason why 85% of your immune system is in your gut. Antibiotics can be so disruptive to your long term health because they indirectly weaken your immune system by wiping out your protective, healthy bacteria.
So, if you are prescribed antibiotics, you must recover your good bacteria as soon as the antibiotics course has been completed. There are simple ways you can do this.
Basically, as I say to everyone who listens to me, if you have a good daily intake of Soluble fibre and natural probiotic bacteria (dairy free) then you are highly unlikely to suffer bowel disease.
Key Product: Colon cleanse. There are many products to support your elimination processes. Colon cleanse is a product I developed myself. It is a 3 in 1 formulation that repopulates the gut with good bacteria, but it also includes an amazing soluble fibre that ‘cleanses’ your system on a daily basis. It is the basis for nearly all of my bowel health programmes.
If your regional body fat composition is higher than it should be, this increases your chances of chronic disease – simple as that.
Those of you that saw the health programme featuring Angel Ripon some weeks ago will know that you don’t have to be overweight to have high levels of visceral fat (fat around the organs).
So knowing your levels could be useful. The Tanita Body Composition equipment I have will make these calculations in seconds.
When people come to see me, I not only want to look at the immediate problems that are affecting them but also how we can keep them healthy in the future and prevent disease. Getting the above scores to reasonable levels helps us to achieve this.
This is obviously a massive area and far too big to go into here. Your mental approach to life will often determine how healthy you are going to be. On-going Adrenal stress can promote inflammation in your body and this in turn can lead to disease. A mindful approach to life and finding ways to relax are always to be encouraged. One of my key roles in therapy is to help you cope with stress and to help you plan your life more effectively and to help you get your priorities in the order.
To say that high levels of sugar consumption over many years is a major contributor to disease is a massive understatement. A high glycaemic diet leads to more of the hormone insulin and this leads to hormonal in-balances and higher levels of inflammation which in turns leads to disease.
Sugar also promotes acidity in your body which leads to acidosis and disease.
Diseases such as cancer thrive on sugar. It is no coincidence that all natural clinics for cancer around the world look at removing sugar from their clients’ diets as one of the key protocols for tackling cancer. I work on a combination of three different diets that are all have a low glycaemic load. Reducing sugar in your diet isn’t easy but by eating the right foods I can help you stabilise your blood sugar levels and reduce those cravings.
Assessing your nutritional status is an important part of any consultation. A long term lack of essential nutrients can be one the causes of disease. Using the bioresonance machine I can test for the main vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to see what you might be short of. Once I have this information I can draw up a nutritional plan to reduce the risk of deficiencies.
Everyone has their own unique way of relaxing. It might be exercise, watching movies, going to yoga classes etc Whatever it is, you must plan it in to your daily life. If you are anxious or adrenally stressed then finding ways to reduce this has to be a priority because stress is a major cause of inflammation and, subsequently, disease. There are many ways that you can do this and my aim is to help you find the best way forward for you.
Prescription drugs may be lifesavers and are often necessary. However I do find that many people are on drugs ‘for life’ often unnecessarily.
If your diet and lifestyle changes from the time when you started taking your drug, then your need for this specific drug may change. I encourage everyone to take responsibility for their own health and this means having a frank discussion with your doctor about any long term drugs you may be taking. If you doctor recommends you to stay on a particular drug then of course you will need to do so. However, if your doctor can see that you are taking responsibility for your own health and he/she feels that a particular drug is not crucial or it has side effects that may out-weigh the benefits, then he/she may be happy for you to wean yourself off it. This is important because the use of many drugs long term can have adverse effects and they can act as ‘therapy blocks’ which may prevent your body from healing itself.
